I realized that I just hijacked my own thread, so I will start a new post asking that question. Sorry.

Are you wanting to stay in the San Diego county area? Or, if you could find a teaching job in a nice area, still in California (Southern), would you be interested?

canibeyou-I grew up in Southern California and I do long to move back down there. I am willing to move and teach anywhere that has sun. We can only afford about 400 for a home. Do you have any suggestions? Oh, and I also would like to be able to get to the beach within an hour as I am a diver.

The city of Tehachapi is gorgeous and very affordable. You can get a nice place on acreage for $400 (and under). And, from what I remember, Kern County is hiring. I'm not a teacher, so I don't know where you'd look to find out if they are indeed hiring. Tehachapi is about 2 hours North of LA; in a beautiful valley between Bakersfield and Mojave.

I am a teacher moving from Washington to Carlsbad, I taught in LA city schools for seven years, and subbed in CA and WA for the last three. I have a multiple subject teaching credential, a CLAD, a reading specialist credential, and a masters in education. I was planning to sub in Carlsbad and neighboring areas first, and then make my way in and hopefully find a permanent position. I was shocked when I found out the sub pay rate! In Washington state, I make 127.00 a day, in LA I made 130.00 a day, Carlsbad pays their subs 85.00 a day! I consider that such an insult! So, I don't know if I could afford to sub first. I heard that the private schools may pay more for subs, does anyone know? or maybe I could do private tutoring? any ideas? I am also authorized to teach at the junior college level, does anyone know the sub rate at the local junior college?

Yuma, Arizona is desperate for teachers. It's about 2 1/2 drive from SD.

I can tell you that I live in Carlsbad and am finishing my masters in Ed and am taking my family to AZ. In over a year of looking the best I have found in the North County area is substitute or teachers aid. When it costs as much as it does to live here $85/day doesnt cut it. I am already talking with schools before I am completely finished with my certification and fully expect several offers when I finish. North County is beautiful and amazing but it is insane to think normal people can live there comfortably. We are purchasing a 3000sf ft home on a 15k sq ft lot for a mortgage that will be less than what we are paying for a 25 year old condo in Carlsbad.

If you are certified in math or science secondary or spec ed there are a few options but the pool of candidates is way to big.

Wanttoteach, I feel your pain!!!!!! I have posted previously on all this, so will spare you all from the gory details, but I wasn't able to find a full-time contract while living in CA (we recently moved to FL). If you are set on moving to San Diego but can't land a contract, my advice is to find some long-term sub positions (if you can swing it financially), or day-to-day subbing (can be a dead-end, though...be careful with that), or pursue private/charter schools if you can swing any of those options financially. You may get lucky and land an interview in Chula Vista, Coronado, etc., but don't take it personally if you don't. I understand how your heart is in the general classroom...I, too, was advised to pursue special ed., but didn't really want to go that route, either. Sassberto said it well regarding too many teachers with credentials in SD, but the jobs are going to bilinguals, etc. You could always try e-mailing/faxing your resume directly to principals and not dealing with HR right now. I've heard of that working for someone that got a job in San Diego City Schools. (The squeaky wheel gets heard, right???!!) Best of luck to you!

Jax,
Thank goodness I did get a few interviews just recently. We will see what happens. There are so many well qualified people...but I know I do such a wonderful job. I am crossing my fingers! I know there are lots of other candidates, but hopefully I can stick out in some way (a good way of course Last year when I interviewed I just didn't do that well...I really goofed...but hopefully I can let my real self shine through this time. Anyway, thank you for letting me know that you too have been there!
