I don't think the town is that bad but it's whats in the water that scares the hell out of me.

"Three years ago, San Diego State University researchers reported that hepatitis A was present in 80 percent of water samples taken off the Imperial Beach Pier. "

Hepatitis vaccinations offered at beach

Granted, in regards to Imperial Beach--I don't swim in the water. But I still have always found the area interesting.

Imperial Beach seems to have a not so nice reputation, but I have found it to be one of the more accessible beaches in the San Diego area. Parking is never a major problem in my experience. Also, I don't know why some people are so down on Imperial Beach. The town itself is quaint, and the seafood restaurant at the end of the pier served some of the best fish I ever tasted!
Have always liked I.B. too - It's gritty, maybe one of the grittier of the beaches, yet there is a certain serenity about it too, more reminiscent of some of the north county beaches. Great beach for walking or running too--go early in the morning or on a weekday afternoon and you feel like you've got it to yourself.

Good coffee and espresso at the Cow-A-Bunga too!
