My husband and I are moving to the Ocean Beach area. I may have a job in Oceanside. How is the commute? Drive time? It is a retail job so hours very...mornings, mid afternoons, including weekends. I would be coming home late afternoons, late evening.

I have a feeling for the most part I will be working opposite traffic.

Thank you much!

It is a long drive. Northbound AM should not be too bad - the worst traffic will be leaving OB. However southbound PM will be pretty tough as the 5 can stacks up from the 52 offramp all the way to downtown after about 4PM. I would plan on 45-60 minutes.

An OB to Oceanside commute would really suck. OB is a great place to live. Find another job.

Another job is not an option after 19 years..and this economy. My husband will have to pick another area to live. I don't know that any area is set in stone yet. I had a feeling the commute wouldn't be pretty. I remember when we used to live in Orange County and driving to SD.

Like others said, it's a long drive and will get tiresome. What about Encinitas? It's a yuppified OB in many ways.

You can always take the scenic route home along the coast. Might even be faster with the traffic.

If Oceanside is your work location, look for a place to live in Leucadia. Leucadia is the northern edge of Encinitas (zip 92024). Here's a link: Leucadia California Photo Guide of Pier, Beach, Mission

There's nothing like Ocean Beach but OB and Leucadia have a lot in common. Leucadia is an easy 15-20 minute commute to most places in Oceanside.

A sample Leucadia rental --> 2 BR 2BA / Yard / 1 Block to Beach (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/apa/1359950568.html - broken link)

We've always maintained a safe 1000 mile distance from both our parents. We've been married for over 20 years. Distance is the secret.

We have been lucky enough to maintain 1,000 miles for the last 11 years of our 18yrs and you are correct. I'm not thrilled about moving back. He wants to move to OB for the hippy vibe..if you get my meaning...not my cup of tea.
