Lately, my friends and I have had the urge to drive out somewhere quiet around town and stare at the sky for a few hours. Does anyone know of a good little-known field or open area or not-so-open area--basically, anywhere that's dark where there aren't a bunch of people disrupting the peace-- with a good view of the stars?

Any suggestions are much appreciated! We're the spontaneous random-location type so anywhere in San Diego would be good. Thank you!

anywhere out there really will work, the further you get away from the city the less light pollution and the more stars you see.

San Diego Astronomical Association owns a piece of land out near Boulevard that is used as an observation site. They have lots of parking space, concrete pads to set up your own observation equipment, and even a 22 inch telescope. It's far enough from the city to provide light pollution free environment and unobstructed sky.

The downside is that it's seriously in the middle of nowhere (roughly an hour' drive from El Cajon) and you need to be a member, which costs $30/year.

Anywhere east of Alpine would be a good start.

A little further away is Anza Borrego Desert State Park. You can see the Milky Way out there if the conditions are right.

I agree, excellent anywhere east of Alpine. I like Mt Laguna myself as I like to camp. Not only are you away from the city lights but there's nothing like clear mountain air. It's almost s if you can reach out and touch them.

Sunrise highway is good, easy to get too also. Watched a meteor shower when I was a kid once...bring warm clothes though since it is 4,000+ ft. altitude.
