Hello all
I will be coming to San Diego in around 6 months still saving up. I have been lurking through this thread for a while now. 1st I'll tell you about me. I'm from Virginia, black, single mother of 1 and a massage therapist / esthetican. Oh and I'm looking for a basement apartment to start off. I have a semi new car so transportation isn't a problem. I understand that California is not doing well at the moment but I've made up my mind and am looking for advice on how to make it work not discouragement. I am under 30 but I understand if I want to live with SoCal admenities that I wont have 200 channels or the newest IPhone to start off. However SoCal cost a lot less than DC I would prefer some place safe and diverse. I prefer it near the beach but as long as its San Diego and safe I'll be fine.

My only concern is California's school system. From what I've read they are extremely over crowded. IDK what to do hmmmm Chicago's schools are fine but you're likely to be shot trying to get home, Florida is the sexual offender capital of the US, DC is too expensive and NY has no places to live. A little off subject any way I look forward to hearing from you.

Ok so I thought San Diego was amoungst the most liberal cities in the U.S. I'm reading a thread that's stating other wise. I would very much like imput on this subject as well. Another thing I'm noticing is the threads concerning the beauty industry and single parents receive very little responce. Very interesting indeed.

I can't help you with schools. But politically, San Diego is a little RED island in a big BLUE state.

Houses in San Diego generally do not have basements. Adjust your housing expectations to be a 50-year old 8-unit apartment complex in an area with failing schools and questionable safety.

Outside of the central city, with typical crime and drug issues, San Diego is often hardcore conservative.

Hmmmmm...I'm from Virginia I can live with conservatives. Now lets talk housing. What do you think $45000 to $50000 a year will get me in San Diego?

Sadly most places in the country have failing schools.

Rent or buy?

40k is basically a lower-middle class income in CA. This is one of the most expensive regions in the country. Compare it to the DC metro, it's not really that different in terms of cost.

Renting.
DC is slightly more expensive but I understand. I just want a different lifestyle for what DC's offering. Personally I didn't care for Atlanta much and Florida has far too much violence as I would also never consider moving to LA.

Im getting the feeling Sassberto is getting frustrated with me but it is possible to live decently on little money. I would like somebody to please tell me about some of the moderate middle class rentals. I hope $45000 to $50000 will not put me in government housing. Am I hoping for too much?

That kind of income won't put you into government housing. There's a 9-10 year wait for Section 8 anyway. What ages are your children? How much od you want to spend on rent every month? Do you want a house or an apartment? Do you have a job lined up? If so, what area of San Diego will you be working in? These are factors to help get the answers that you want. Living near the beach can be expensive, though.

Thank you Moved. I would like to rent to start. Its just me and my 5 year old. I'm talking to a few salons but would never move without a job and a little padding money. I prefer to be more coastal because of the beach and having read the farther east the more out of place I'll be.

I dont know how much I'm looking to pay as I'd perfer a 2 bedroom but if I had to get a studio I'll be fine with that too. So between $700-$1200 I'm guessing. I'll know better when I actually sign papers for a job.
