I am looking to move to Southern CA next year and was looking at Orange County but keep hearing how flashy and materialistic it is from other posts. However, the general consensus seems to be that San Diego is a great place to live.

My husband and I lived in San Jose, CA and LOVED it but will be moving south this time. Know of anywhere similar?

I'd say San Diego is less flashy and image conscious as the OC (although La Jolla and other areas of SD certainly give Newport Beach a run for its money), but it's not San Jose either. Keep in mind, though, that neither county is 100 percent one way or the other. When people say OC is materialistic, they don't mean Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and places like that. Likewise, there are parts of SD where you may feel the need to keep up with the Joneses, but not everywhere. I'm sure in a county of 3 million + you can find people and neighborhoods that suit you.

San Diego is basically the same as the OC / LA region, there are a few differences but they are minor. San Diego is generally the less polished, less moneyed, smaller version of those areas, but there are certainly parts of San Diego County that are pretty much indistinguishable from South OC.

Much of North County San Diego is very similar to south OC. LaJolla and many of the areas to the north near the coast are pretty much the same as what you will find in south OC along the coast, although Encinitas and Leucadia have a more chill vibe. The further east or south you go in San Diego County the more blue collar feeling it has, but as you head into those areas you will encounter some questionable places to live.

I don't think SD is as materialistic and flashy as La or OC overall. Some people are like that and certain areas have that vibe somewhat but it's not the majority imo. In my experience I haven't come across too many people that are flashy/materialistic overall, although I see people that fit the stereotype. SD has lots of different types of people imo, I've managed to meet mostly normal people. A lot of SD is fairly middle class/blue collar and people dress pretty casually overall too. I grew up in the Bay Area (Walnut Creek area) and I don't really find the level of materialism any worse than what you'd find in places like Danville, Blackhawk, San Ramon, etc...

The answer is yes. Anyone who tells you the two places are the same hasn't spent much time in both places.

I've heard Camp Pendleton called the "Great Wall of Orange County", referring to the differences between S.D. and O.C. culture. I'd have to say the major difference I've noted is that the people seem less friendly in O.C. The difference is subtle, but strangely noticeable the minute you get to San Clemente.

SD is less materialistic and shallow than OC IMO. More so than most places in the Bay Area but I wouldn't say it's as bad as OC. As jkos said, Camp Pendleton is the great devide so to speak.

While San Diego isn't as conservative and probably not as materialistic as parts of OC, it is still leaning that way. If you are looking for a laid back, and more blue collar atmosphere try the towns just a bit south like Chuela Vista as starters or head east..The northen parts of the country will be much like OC.
