I'm traveling to San Diego for vacation next week but would like to know how long it will take me to drive from Sea World to downtown LA on a Friday night. Plan to leave around 5pm so how bad is traffic and how long will it take me to get there?

Roughly 3 hours anywhere between 2-7pm unless you're traveling with someone else, in which case you can use the carpool lanes which may help cut the time down by an hour. It usually gets back around Del Mar, Irvine, and of course Downtown L.A.

about 3 hours, but the carpool lane doesn't even help things all that much. It definitely won't cut your time down by an hour, maybe a few minutes, but I've been in that lane several times when it's been just as backed up as well. Just pick your chances with it.

If it were me, I'd wait until rush hour was over before heading up to LA.

You'll spend extra time and waste gas just sitting in traffic if you leave at 5pm.

On a good day, you can travel the whole distance in 2 hours. Try to avoid L.A. traffic by all means. The highways over there overcrowded 24/7.

traffic into LA starts to back up around 6am and stays that way until 930 or 10. the afternoon commute starts slowing around 3pm and does start ease up until 7 or 8. that would make for a difficult day trip since you also have to factor in SD traffic, although it isn't as bad.

How fast do you plan on going? If you can find that out, using some simple math, we can then determine how long it will take you.

Highways can be congested or even gridlocked in LA at anytime, even a sunday. When we were there one weekend afternoon we kept wondering where the accident was. There was not one-just a day in the life. We took a shuttle from SD airport to LAX not long ago (plane broke), in the early afternoon on a weekday and got there in an hour and 45 min-plenty of traffic but not horrid. I thought that was pretty good, but I thought the driver was going too fast (we all had flights out of LAX). I think rush hour would be a living hell.
