that are reasonable rent. We want to rent short term before we decide we are staying in SD and where we'd like to purchase a home. Ideally, we are looking for a 3 bdrm 2 bth home, but can live in a 2 + 2 condo/townhouse type of place. Want a family friendly safe area... any suggestions?

East County for its conservative values. We just moved to Santee six months ago and like it. Of course, I shouldn't presume anything just based upon the fact that you're homeschooling, but I am.

People generally base their housing location on their work location. In what part of town will you be working?

I homeschooled for two years, have lived in SD for 8 years. Best areas for families [though homeschoolers are found throughout the city and county, including more urban areas],but the best areas IMO are:
Carmel Valley [where i presently am;my neighbors homeschool, too,it turns out]
Clairemont [central SD,off the 5]
Bay Park-near the bay, hence the name, next to clairemont
Poway [just north of scripps ranch, inland also]
Scripps Ranch [inland,almost north]
Carlsbad [north coastal]
Parts of UTC [central SD]
La Jolla if you can afford it
Same with Del Mar
Encinitas [north coastal]
Parts of Escondido [north inland]

For south bay,parts of Bonita
East bay: La Mesa is good for HS

You will find all types of homeschooling in SD,including holistic, unschooling, waldorf, christian, etc. I am not christian, but i will say there is a large group of Christian HS'ers in SD county as a whole. If you are Christian and looking for that influence, especially look at escondido, poway and la mesa and clairemont. The others are fine, too. Just an overall picture for that aspect.

Although, for cheaper: clairemont, poway [sort of] and la mesa [again, sort of]. You can rent more for your money in those areas, for the most part. Though we pay 1460 for a 2/2 with amenities apt in carmel valley,900 sq. ft,to give you an indication for comparison. Check craig's list for ideas on price ranges.

Also, there are playgroups and outings around the city,so you will never be more than a 20 min drive from something,if you stick with the above areas.

Good luck!

La Mesa is a pretty decent area for that cheap, but I'd recommend more Carmel Vally area. Santee is nice, but there is still racism in those parts (it borders Lakeside, not a good area. Also, do NOT move to Chula Vista.)

Encinitas.....anywhere in the San Dieguito Union School district is good. You don't want sub-par schools and I really doubt a school in La Mesa is going to be of the same quality as one in...say...Encinitas/Cardiff/La Costa/Del Mar.

Poway is less expensive, but has great schools as well.
