Looking at a house today for sale in Mira Mesa with a canyon fork in the back. There is a small trail down in the canyon about 30ft from the house down the slope and there was some trash - a grocery bag and some fast food containers and some other things. I doubt it could have been blown down there by the wind. Is this a bad sign pointing to homeless people living in the canyon behind the house? I will go down and investigate sometime, but there's not much I can do about it if so, right?

Did you see clothes and cardboard along with the fast food containers? If you did, it means that people are living in the canyon.

Nope... didn't see that thankfully, but I will take a walk further down the path to see what turns up.

Very common that homeless and day laborers live in canyons. It could also just bee teenagers hanging out and smoking weed. You should investigate it carefully.

Just walk in there. It should be pretty easy to figure out if anyone's living there. Either way, even if you buy the place, it should be pretty easy to get rid of anyone going back there at night.

We have a canyon in our neighborhood. I don't live on the canyon side of the street but my neighbors across the street tell me more stories of coyotes and skunks than of human residents. At times there are camp sites down there and neighborhood volunteers contact law enforcement. We also have canyon clean ups once or twice a year. Just had one recently where a dumpster was placed at an entrance to the canyon and neighbors spent the morning hauling trash which ranged from lots of food and drink wrappers (probably mostly left by kids) to illegally dumped small appliances and a ton of clothes. We saw a couple of signs of what may have been camp sites. There was one man sitting at the base of some steps coming down from a back yard of a canyon home, drinking and watching us for some time. The energy he gave off was that of a person who wished we trash hauling do gooders would go away and leave him in peace. Eventually he wandered off.

I wouldn't worry. There's a lot of illegal aliens that live in the canyons in the area. A good sign (actually I wouldn't call it "good") is if you see bicycles hidden in the bushes. When I lived in Mira Mesa, off Zapata Ave (which has a canyon behind the house), I'd go down in the canyon with my dog. I'd always find stuff down there, a beach cruiser for one, which I promptly brought to my house. Even with all the trash and stuff in the canyon, I never had any problems.

"a beach cruiser for one, which I promptly brought to my house."

You stole a migrant worker's bike?

it was a bike that was sitting in the bushes for a few days. And it wasn't stealing. If you found a dollar bill on the ground, would you pick it up?
