My husband is relocating to work at the Mexican border from Michigan around July. We have an 8 month old and one on the way in October.
I need advice on best areas (safe) to rent that's not longer than a 30-40 minute drive. We would like 3 bedrooms and no more than 1700 per month.

If you know the apartment complex name that would help in my research.
Also if anyone knows of a house thats for rent that would work too.

And then any other info that you may think will be helpful for newcomers!

Check out Craigslist for apartments and houses in your price range. Look in Chula Vista, Eastlake, and Bonita for starters. Then when you find them, post the addresses on here for reviews. But you're probably not going to find a three bedroom for $1700 anywhere in San Diego, unless it's in a bad neighborhood.

Um,OP will definitely possibly find a 3 bedroom apt for 1700.
But more common is 2 bedroom 2 bath with amenities such as pool and tennis. in other words,a very nice condo or apt,but only 2 bedrooms. ia gree with you about chula vista, eastlake and bonita as best location options.

You probably can find a 3 bedroom APT for under $1700 in a decent area. Most of San Diego County is safe when compared to other big city areas. Avoid City Heights and Southeast San Diego (especially west of Euclid). There are good neighborhoods in those areas, but there are also some tor up neighborhoods with drug/gang problems, so things can and do happen.

South San Diego (Nestor, San Ysidro, Egger Highlands, Otay Mesa , Palm City) have some nice neighborhoods, but there are gang problems/rough spots mixed into those areas. So you would have to double check on apartments/condos in those areas.

National City has a lot of decent apartments, but there are also some pretty rough ones there too, so double check on anything in NC.

Most of Chula Vista is nice-especially the area east of 3rd Avenue, and north of Hilltop Drive. Almost anything on CV's east side is decent (Eastlake is a subdivision on CV's east Side). Also, Imperial Beach and Linda Vista have decent areas. Look into: Bonita, La Mesa, North Park, South Park, Hillcrest, Serra Mesa, San Carlos, Del Cerro, Allied Gardens, Grantville, Tierrasanta, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasqitos, Poway, Ocean Crest, Point Loma/Loma Portal.

And BTW-if you do look into CV, stay out the Otay neighborhood, and neighborhoods west of 5th Avenue (gang problems). Most of the Castle Park neighborhood is decent (it looks rougher than it is), but there are some problem spots there too. But overall, CV is a nice city.
