Husband is in the military and we will be moving to Miramar in late June. We are looking to rent house/apartment while we are there. Any advice about where we should look? Places to stay away from? Any help is greatly appreciated.

What's your budget for a rental home? Any school-age kids?

We'll need a budget because there is a wide range of housing near there.

Max rent would be $2200. No children.

Scrippes Ranch is more upscale while Mira Mesa would be close but more affordable. The cheapest rent wise would be Tierra Santa as the further east you go the cheaper things get though the west bound Highway 52 is packed with traffic in the morning while the east bound is packed in the evenings. Personally, I'd pick Mira Mesa or Scrippes Ranch.

University City is just west of Miramar. Your husband could possibly bike to work from this rental:
University City (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/1624851515.html - broken link)

Also University City is an easy 5-10 minute drive to some very nice beaches in La Jolla.

Thank you both for you advice. Another question, are auto insurance rates high for the area? Currently we have full coverage on both of our cars and pay about $1200 a year.

Auto insurance prices have lots and lots of variables. It's best to talk with a local insurance agent to get prices. Ask your husband's future co-workers for a local insurance referral.

Any reason why you don't want to live in military housing? We are military and almost all of our friends live in housing (Coronado, Eastlake, Miramar, and Murphy Canyon) and they love it.

I'm stationed at Miramar and so far I have lived in Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Gaslamp and now San Marcos. The rent was within 300 dollars difference between all with the exception of the Gaslamp. Howver when I lived in Scripps Ranch it was so much better due to the lack of time spent on the freeway. Being under 10 miles from work and not having to commute was work the little extra in the rent. Military housing is alright now, so I heard but when I moved here they lack A/C and didn't allow window units, something about not having freedom of how to cool/heat myself just didn't sit right. I perfer to stay along the 15 if your going to commute and always choose a house/townhouse over an apartment or condo. The prices are that much difference but the privacy is worth it.
