Hello-- wow, alot of Bostonians seem to be migrating to San Diego! Well, I am also ready to make the move. I am ready to GET OUT of Boston. Sick of the cold weather, rude people, and public transportation. I've been to San Diego and know it's my kind of place. I need sun, nice weather, being outside, friendly people, etc, etc.

I am an Elementary school teacher w/ a Special Education degree. Does anyone know how teaching jobs are out there?? Are they hard to come by?? I think Special Education is in high demand in any city, but thought I'd check on here first. I've been on Edjoin and see jobs posted....just very risky move without a job...especially when I have a very secure job in a top district here in Boston. Just know I can't stay here forever!! Any advice would be great. Also any recommendations on what areas to live in...I am a 31 year old female....looking for an area with young professionals, without too many college kids or recent grads. Thanks

Permament teaching jobs are nonexistent here. Yes, there are jobs on EdJoin, but they're very choosy about they hire, and the jobs are probably preselected.

The California public school system is having severe budget cuts, and employees are being pink slipped. Even substitute work, teaching and classified is hard to come by these day, because the displaced permanent employees are taking those assignments. If you have a secure job, stay where you are.

If you want to teach, consider another state. Also search the forums for information on San Diego City Schools that has already been posted.

I know for a fact there are jobs available for special education teachers. It is about the only job in teaching you can get. If you are bilingual and/or willing to work in a poor school, you will have options.

Awww, that is not the answer i wanted to hear, but thanks for being honest! I know, having a secure job right now is something that a lot don't have. Oh well, i guess i'll apply from here and if i happen to get something, i'll go for it. Otherwise, I guess i shouldn't risk moving all the way out there and then not have a job

You need to have all your ducks in a row re: credentialing and licenses, etc. but the demand is still there. My wife is a special ed teacher. Her girlfriend in Sacramento went back into the classroom this year despite hiring freezes and my wife is constantly being courted by principals to come back and work for them. There is very high turnover in sped, majority of teachers leave the career within the first 5 years... so there are almost always openings somewhere, you might have to try the various districts.

Thanks so much for the info. I've been in Special Ed. for 8 years now and have my Master's. So, hopefully someone will want me at their school! If you happen to know of any districts, feel free to pass along the info! Thanks for your help!!

I earned my CA teaching credentials in 2008. We plan to make our move to SD this June. Can anyone comment on this placement company? I noticed it on craigslist. Cal/West Educators Placement Thanks.

I actually just went through the whole application process with CalWest. I also met with the East Coast recruiter for an initial interview. They are helpful, but they were honest with me in that there aren't any Special Education positions in private schools. So, i was sort of out of luck in that regard. They have 2 major recruitment events (1 in San Fran and 1 in LA)- the LA one is for all SoCal teaching positions and is in March. They highly recommend going to 1 of these to secure a job....you basically go and all of the schools are there and you just interview all day long. Definitely look into it, it sounds like it's tough to find a public school job. Good luck

You shouldn't need a placement firm. Start with edjoin. They list recruiting events as well.

Welcome to EDJOIN!
