Look here for information on San Diego, note the link about schools.
San Diego Travel: Attractions

I recommend University City, nice family neighborhood, houses are about 700K or more for 4 bedroom. If you choose public school, it would be University High (not a great school, but there are definitely worst schools). Much depends on the friends your child makes.

For the 4th grader, your choices would be Doyle Elementary school (used to be a really good school with lots of diversity and smart kids from UCSD parents; however new principal has turned this to be a downward spiraling school.); Currie Elementary school (very good school with smart, local kids, a very stable population); or Spreckel's Elementary (not such a great school, however has a great Seminar program and is a Spanish magnet school which is to say, bilingual school).

I don't know how the previous poster can make such bold statements about our UC schools with any integrity. Doyle is an academically challenging school with excellent administration and teachers. Parents and children move to the area from all over the world and their experiences and strong work ethic shape the environment. The principal is accessible to parents and the teachers work together to teach such diverse students, doing so remarkably well. As for Spreckels, I could not wish for a better school. Every teacher my child has had has filled him with the love of learning. The librarian is excellent and so are the Spanish, computer, and art classes. The administration is always around and available to parents. The kids are happy and succeeding. Test scores are lower than Curie, but Spreckels has at least forty percent non/ English as a first language, but among English speakers, scores are the same.

The schools may be better in Poway etc, but bear in mind that the weather is milder in UC (don't need air con for instance) and the commute to UCSD is a breeze (which is not true north of the merge or Poway/RB).

Default same boat as you

Hi, we are also moving from the SF bay area, except the kids are still in elementary years. But of course I have to look at all middle and high schools. I have been advised to rent before buying. I am looking at houses in PUSD and Scripps as of now. But either the house is near a high traffic road or has bad lighting.
Why is it so difficult to find a "normal" house?
