I am considering moving to San Diego or Orange County.

What would you say are the pros and cons of living in San Diego versus Orange County?

Your opinion is appreciated!

Move to OC.
More to do
More people(if you like bigger populations)
Much Safer
Close to both LA and SD if you need to go there.
And it's well maintained.

This comparison really isn't fair. OC should be compared to other suburban counties like Marin (SF), Lake (Chicago), and Westchester (NYC). All of which are neighboring counties to large cities.

That said, OC is snoozeville to me. My brother lives in south OC and while it's nice, it's about as suburban as it gets. Everything closes at 9:00pm. People make OC out to be entirely uber weathy, but the truth is, many places north of the 55 freeway (Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Fullerton, Anaheim, La Habra, Westminister, etc.) aren't that nice.

There are plenty of reasons why people in LA look down at and make fun of OC.

I am sure some more of you San Diego natives have opinions about what makes San Diego better / worse / different from Orange County. Let me know what you think! Thanks.

OC is about the same size in population as San Diego County but is alot smaller. I would say the coastal parts of OC are the rich parts.

I'm an East Coaster. However, my wife is a native of San Diego, my in-laws still live in San Diego, and we have several friends who live in southern Orange County. Alas, we find ourselves in SoCal several times each year.

If I had to move to SoCal permanently, I would pick San Diego County over Orange County. Because of the rampant suburban sprawl, I find Orange County rather cramped, congested, and dull. Despite the densely-populated coast and the I-15 corridor, San Diego County is more spread out. I also think San Diego County has a lot more to offer than Orange County. In addition to the city proper and the coastline, you have the inland valleys, mountains, high desert, and low desert. As a hiking enthusiast, I'm never at a loss to find a new place to explore!

Default San Diego vs OC

I lived in Orange County (Placentia) for five years, and San Diego for twenty five. I prefer San Diego. Reasons:

Funky beach towns
Less smog
A variety of areas (beach, mountains, desert) closer
Two big bays
Close to Mexico
Has more "touristy" things to do
Traffic is bad, but not as bad as OC
There are real differences between San Diego neighborhoods, while OC seemed all the same.

The county is so small so everything has to be packed into it, including the 3 million residents, but I never had any problems with traffic going through OC, mainly because I take the toll road and skip part of the 5. The freeway (toll) is wide open.

San Diego is not a very educated city. Only 34% of the million plus population has a college degree ( BA or higher).
