Will be visiting SD for a few days this summer. Would like to rent a car for one day and show a friend around. What are some scenic drives, the best ones in the area. We would like to maybe head up to La Jolla. Is there a scenic drive from say downtown SD along a coast to La Jolla? Any other scenic drives other than Point Loma, which we will also explore. Thanks. If i want to pick up a rental car from kettner ave, how far is that from the Marriott marina? Can i walk or take public transport?

A great coastal drive is up Highway 101 from as far south as La Jolla up the coast to Oceanside. You could start at Carmel Valley Road just south of Del Mar and take it north from there. It'll take you through some cool little beach towns (Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia, Carlsbad) with some amazing ocean views along the way.

Kettner runs north/south (mostly) from the airport to right near the Marriott Marina. The airport to Kettner is a very long walk. The Marriott to Kettner is an easy walk.

For a fun tour of San Diego consider GoCar: GoCar - The Cure for the Common Tour. Exciting sightseeing activities in San Francisco, San Diego and Miami!
They can program the car to take you on a nice scenic coastal drive.

A much wider scenic drive more in line with what your asking than this answer can be found here:

Another great but full day trip is to drive up the Sunset Highway along the crests of the Cuyamacas and Mt. Laguna and descend into Julian and Anzo Borrego desert.

My wife and I did that drive two weeks ago. Sunrise Hwy is incredible. Anzo Borrego... not so much. We used to live in Phoenix. AZ has some beautiful deserts.
