low income and english learners do not inhibit their schools from performing at high levels. Its a testament to all the hard work parents and administrators put into education.

not really. White kids at the school are largely middle class with an average number of upper middle class, and a small number of rich kids. Not even close to having the same level of affluence as Carlsbad, San Dieguito, or Poway high schools. A large number of wealthy kids in the La Costa, San Elijo, and Rancho Carrillo area of SMUSD actually end up getting a district transfer to Carlsbad or San Dieguito
The interesting thing is that the API score of San Marcos High is likely to increase a lot more in upcoming years. San Elijo Middle, which sends all its kids to SMHS has a white population of around 750 (tested grades 6-8), while the actual high school only has 450 (tested grades 9-11). There is going to be a significant increase in the percentage of white kids at SMHS once San Elijo is built out and all the children grow up- meaning that the overall school API is going to be a lot closer to 877. It will probably end up passing Carlsbad (which Mission Hills already did), La Costa Canyon, and some other reputable schools in wealthy areas.
San Marcos caucasians come from hard working families that instill these values into education. Also, SMUSD schools are much more strict than nearby districts. There is less room for screwing around. Kids from wealthier families think they are entitled to everything and put less emphasis on education because they know daddy can always pay for them.
you see a lot less of this in san marcos.
i realize that this is a huge generalization, but believe it or not it contributes to SMHS high test scores and LCCs low test scores (considering its affluence)
There is ,however, a huge difference between hispanics and caucasians smhs.

They have the best reputation in San Diego~ high graduation rates, college attendance, sports programs, etc. The Poway and San Dieguito districts are arguably the best in the county. Families usually locate to these areas for the primary purpose of sending their kids to these schools. For example, many families that send their kids to Torrey Pines move from houses in other cities to small apartments (especially the complex across the street) just so that their kids attend. Poway is by far a more reasonably priced area to live in and it has a nice family environment as well. A general rule of thumb is to follow the highest API scores for the more reputable schools. New scores were released this week. these are the highest performing high schools north of the 52, and basically in San Diego County(by API):

We are moving to ocean hills area and we will be zoned for Rancho Buena Vista high school. My son wad also accepted to Mission Vista High School. Which is better in your opinion?

Mission Vista didn't exist when I was in high school. I lived on the border of SM Unified & Vista Unified. My house was actually closer to RBV, but it didn't have a great reputation at the time.
