Anybody here take scuba lessons? Is it expensive? Also, was it hard to get certified? Good scuba places around SD?

La Jolla cove is awesome. That's the place to go. If you do group lessons it's not that expensive. $300-400ish tops for everything.

Ugh. I don't think I am ready for scuba lessons. I think I would have trouble with some of the swimming requirements.

Thanks for posting that link though.

Reality check. Why would you want to scuba here ? The water is like 40 degrees once you drop below 10 feet. And the visibility is like 8 ft. The water here is as cold as ice.

Try snorkeling first. It's a lot easier. Anybody can float.

Here's a good place in La Jolla Shores: La Jolla Snorkeling — Bike and Kayak Tours, Inc.

Same temp as the islands. Once you are wearing a 7mm suit you are glad the water is not warmer. I found learning in the pools was harder than diving the ocean. In the pool your mask keeps fogging up.

The water is not 40 till you get to 100 feet, and I would say it is more like 58.

Be aware scuba lesson prices vary as to what is included. My lessons were $200 and included all rental equipment. You will always have to buy your own mask, snorkel, fins. I rented my equipment, each time I rented it seemed they did not have a tank or what so I would end up buying a piece at a time.

Sport Chalet has good reasonable lessons, used to have a dive club as well till they were sued for liable when people had accidents.

is there any health issues that can prevent you from taking diving lessons?

I have some health issues like asthma but take meds for it.

@guineapiggie101
late response but you need to get a signoff from your doctor regarding health issues... one of the requirements is that your respitory system is in good condition. Having asthma by itself does not disqualify you if you can have it under control.

Regarding water temps, surface during summer is 64-68F. Under water it may drop to high 50s, I doubt it is 40F even at depth. I dove at the Coronado Islands (near San Diego) in March the temp at 65ft was 52F, now it is significantly warmer
