I know there are a lot of threads on here already, but since everyone wants something a little different, I thought I'd go ahead and ask.

I'm 23, and moved to SD about a year ago. I lived in Escondido first(hated it), and PB for about 4 months(not a big fan of all the craziness). I'm moving again and want to find a new area. I want a place that is fun, (cool bars, younger crowd), but also not so Pacific Beach-ey. I work full time, and an area with similar young professionals would be ideal. I also work in Rancho Bernardo, so somewhere within a 35 minute commute too.

I'm looking for a one bedroom apartment, with a rent under $1200.

Any advice??

How about Downtown, maybe the Gaslamp District?

Anyone remember those days when the city would light the gas lamps. Those were the days.... In San Diego rent under $1200 is almost impossible. Possible if you want to live in the ghetto and even rent in those areas are close to being $1200 a month.

Ok well disregarding the price, is there an area like the one I am looking for?

Gas Lamp, East Village, and North Park would all seem to fit the bill.

South Park sounds great for you. (Golden Hills also may work-it's cheaper and right next door; some reas are hit and miss though). Also, check Kensington.
Parts of North Park might work, as well as University Heights. Though parts of North Park are very miss, def. not hit.

And Mission Hills, too, may work. These are all in roughly the same vicinity-so you can check them out easily. They are central SD. Closer to RB than gaslamp, for the most part. And Kensington is right by the 15; the others all have easy access to either the 15 or 805.

I don't think downtown or the gaslamp is what you're looking for, based on what you said.

Under $1200 rent, for a one bedroom apt is entirely possible in north and south park, univ. heights, normal heights, etc.
Not sure why you are saying that???
I don'tknow the rents for gaslamp, but rents in normal heights, south of adams but north of el cajon, were 710-800 for a one bedroom in my complex, 1000 for a 2 bedroom. walking distance to plenty of cafes and shops, etc.

so, 1200 or less in south park or kensington, which are nicer than normal heights, is not unreasonable at all.
I now live in Carmel Valley, and even here, one bedrooms are just under $1200, and our two bedroom is only 1460. Yes, in del mar area. OP: Just look around; your price range is fine for what you're looking for.

Thanks a lot lrmsd! Do you or anyone else know of good websites/places to find apartments. I have always used craigslist to find roomates in the past, never had to find my own place. This is kind of an overwhelming process...

I was going to say North Park, too. You'd be doing a reverse commute, so you'd get to RB in 20-30 minutes. plus you'd be able to walk to all the kitschy bars and restaurants around there.

North Park, South Park, Hillcrest, University Heights, UTC, Banker's Hill, Mission Hills, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge, Golden Hill, and some parts of the college area. LOTS of places to rent.

Avoid City Heights, Southeast SD, Barrio Logan (under the Coronado Bridge), anywhere around the military base on harbor/33nd st, and for the most part, Logan Heights and Sherman Heights.
