again montclair you are dillusional non of those schools in oakland you listed are public schools for people who live in laurel, thats like trying to hype of the beneifts of bishop odowd to people who live next door and cant afford it. People from laurel cant just "go" to those charter schools, they have to be accepted.

Actually established neighborhoods are considered as such because they are long considered safe and have been as such for several generations.

None of the Oakland neighborhoods mentioned in this thread are new to being middle class-theyve always been that way.

I think out of towners who really are not familiar enough with Oakland show their @ss way too much commenting about things they know absolutely nothing about.

Setting them straight is stress relief.

How Curious...
If that was true, Oakland wouldn't have lost 2.1% of its population since 2007. People are leaving Oakland because, unlike you, they know the truth about Oakland's "middle class" neighborhoods.

The delusion is you acting like its impossible for a student to do well in Oakland-I and countless others are examples of how that's just BS.

Furthermore, Oakland adults age 25+ have a higher educational attainment rate than most suburbs do.

I guess your bellyaching is falling on deaf ears.

While I don't think the stats back this up (I don't think that Thornhill, Montclair, Glenview, Peralta, Joquin Miller, Redwood Heights schools are charter), it is true that Oakland has a pretty crappy school system overall, having little to do with the quality of teaching. If a school is not impacted, parents can send their children to any school in the district, which makes for a mix of parental educational background, parental involvement, and the like regardless of what the neighborhood mix is. Many people living in Oakland's middle class sections do leverage the less expensive mortgage for being able to send their children to private school or fighting to get into the handful of really good public schools. The kids of middle-class parents on my block all happened to get into a public elementary school they're happy with, but the fact is none of those schools are actually our neighborhood school. None of us would send our kids to that one, unfortunately. I suppose if more of us banded together and made a commitment to send all our children to that school, "forcing out" kids who might be behavioral or academic problems, then the neighborhood school might flourish. But no one's doing that.

According to the "Population Estimates" you posted, Oakland is tied with Omaha city, Nebraska in growth. That's not exactly anything to be happy about.

Actual numbers show that 2007-2009, Oakland lost 0.7% of its population a year. That's not an estimate, but an actual fact.

That means nothing. How many graduated from the Oakland Public Schooling system which has a 52% dropout rate?
