Ok, this is the problem. You don't need to take taxis everywhere. Muni, while not great, can get you from here to there for $2/ride. (And if you start after 9 or 10, then you'll get a "late night" transfer which means it'll work on the way back too.) You don't need to go to a bar that charges $10 for drinks, at least not every weekend. (There are PLENTY of bars in SF where you can get good mixed drinks or quality beers for $5-7-ish.) And you most certainly don't need to get 4 of them when you do.

So yes, $35,000 is going to be pretty rough if you want to throw away money unnecessarily whenever you feel like it.

The OP is considering Alameda, so a cab would definitely have to be involved, plus a BART ticket. Once you go through all that trouble to get into the city, you're probably there to party, rather than have a couple drinks then call it a night, which could more easily be done at home. Going to the city to party usually means going to a club, where the drinks can be expensive. Not to mention the fact that it's easy to overspend when you've been drinking. Anyway, it was just a random, cautionary statement based on mistakes I've seen people make.
