It takes four seconds to fall the 220 feet from the Golden Gate Bridge to the waters of the San Francisco Bay below. In that brief instant, a falling body can reach speeds of 75 m.p.h. The impact is almost always fatal.

The barrier is an eyesore on one of the most beautiful structures ever built. You cannot regulate behavior, even suicide. Oppose this plan!

If someone wants to end it, just let them. Don't waste my tax dollars attempting to keep some sad sap alive. We have enough people as it is.

I think someone killing themselves at such a beautiful spot is far more dignified than selfishly forcing your friends or family find you hanged or shot and bloody in the bathroom.

Just a thought: What prevents folks from making two jumps - one on to the net 20 feet below, and then another into the water? Aren't they just delaying the inevitable?

I believe once you hit the net, it pretty much "cocoons" the jumper in the net and makes it difficult for them to scramble out.

Wow, how callous can you be? Putting a few bucks ahead of another person's life? You should learn some empathy, my friend.

I urge anyone reading this to watch "The Bridge" (the outstanding documentary mentioned in the OP's link). It is available online: Hulu - The Bridge - Watch the full feature film now. (http://www.hulu.com/watch/95971/the-bridge - broken link)

It's not about callousness - it's about realism. You cannot MAKE people feel a certain way or do a certain thing.

I've seen "The Bridge." It doesn't change the fact that you shouldn't regulate a person's personal life choice. By the way, it wasn't outstanding - it was slow, boring - I literally fell asleep in the middle of it. The director was forced into being callous himself, but not too callous. That documentary could have been so much more moving.

You neglected to answer my question - how does this stop anyone from a) committing suicide elsewhere, b) committing suicide in the same spot via two jumps?

Some people have a hard time letting go. Let people do what they're going to do because they're going to do it anyway.

Oh yeah, and don't waste my tax dollars creating a boondoggle.

Those posts don't even deserve responses. I saw their posts and just thought wow...some people.

I want to speak from two aspects-who I am.

1. Some of the clients I work with have mental health issues. Some have thoughts of suicide.

2. When I was 16 my father jumped off the GG bridge.

With that said, I oppose the barrier. It won't stop people from commiting suicide. They'll just do it somewhere else. That money would be far better spent for suicide prevention and mental health services.

Better idea. Post warning signs: WARNING Jumping from this bridge might not result in instant death.

People should consider an outcome like this one.

Not being able to do it from such a landmark might deter some people. It's not as romantic to fling yourself off the Benicia Bridge.
