Hi everyone,
I may be moving to the SF Bay area (from NYC) for school. The school is near Hayward. Are there any surrounding areas (perhaps east of Hayward??) that are more "rural" but still commutable to Hayward? I have been looking at surrounding areas like Dublin/Livermore/Pleasanton, but those areas seem more suburban than rural. I'm looking for something that is not in a housing development, perhaps with a small amount of land (an acre or two). Do any areas like this exist, or is everything around there pretty built up?

I have no children so I don't care about schools, and I'm not too concerned with crime. Thanks!

Castro Valley is another choice. There are also a few rural more parts of Dublin and Pleasanton (there are still cows in the Dublin hills, and a rodeo place at the west end of Dublin). But honestly there isn't a whole ton of options like that in the core bay area. But the cities on your list, especially Dublin and Livermore still have quite a few more rural areas in the hills, about 10 or 15 minutes outside of the core suburban parts of town. I believe many of the orignal land grant families have quite a few of the empty plots so there probably isn't much on the market.

You didn't mention a budget. If you have lots you can look at Alamo. People have large lots and horses there. But it is expensive. It is on the other side of the hill from Hayward. (Hayward borders Castro Valley, and on the edge of Castro Valley are a few canyons on the way to San Ramon and the suburbs north of there.

Thank you, Jade! This is exactly what I needed to know. I have been looking on google maps and it looks like everything is all built up and then... nothing. That makes a lot of sense though, if the original land grant families still hold the plots. Thanks again!
