I will be moving into an apartment located at Jackson Street near Lake Merritt area quite soon. It's close to 14th and 15th Street. I was wondering about the safety of this area since I am new to this place. Is Oakland, specifically the area near Jackson Street and its surroundings, safe? I'd highly appreciate all of your insights!

It's not as safe as the other side of the lake (Cleveland Heights/Grandlake) but it's not Deep East Oakland either. Be aware of your surroundings, use common street sense and you will be fine.

19 muggings in the past 2 months. Definitely not a safe area. Look elsewhere, probably outside of Oakland.

mr fantastic often makes up statements about oakland.
we all remember his famous "$20 million dollars in damage and 20,000 rioters" fallacy.

Oakland as a whole really can't be considered unsafe or safe, as it varies so greatly between neighborhoods. As someone else said, your particular neighborhood can be a little more dangerous than some other parts of Lake Merritt, but that doesn't mean you have to sequester yourself in your house or risk life and limb, it just means you should take a few non-onerous precautions in order to avoid becoming an easy target. You'll also be near lots of great restaurants, and BART, which is a huge plus.

Here is a link to the OPD crime map: CrimeView Community Incident Map

And here is a link to preventative steps you can take to avoid becoming a crime victim (good for any Bay Area city, really):

Okay, now I am bit warned! Would that neighborhood safe enough to walk alone in broad daylight and early evening (and but broad daylight and early evening, I am referring to 12PM-6PM)? I will be mainly using BART or AC Transit since I am a student. I do not look feeble by any standard, but then I do not look 'threatening' either.

there are around 3 or 4 government buildings and a courthouse in that area.there is a lot of security along with cameras. daylight and early evening should not be a problem at all.

I feel like it is a bit dark empty around there later at night. So if your headed home at midnight, use basic precautions. Daytime is no problem. (I feel the same way about Lake Merrit BART, things tend to shut down early so it definitely doesn't have the late night community feel.)

Ignore Mr. Fantastic. He thinks merely walking outside your door in Oakland is cause for concern. I live in a safe neighborhood in Oakland and the worst crime I have seen is littering (I've heard about a few property thefts.....ladder, motorcycle, iphone)
