My friend flew in from Seattle today, and said that from above, it looked terrifying; furthermore, initially, up in Seattle they were reporting that it was a plane crash, so when she got off, her phone was inundated with texts and messages convinced she was on the plane

Down at SFO, the stench was awful...

A hundred homes by morning... that's horrible My heart goes out to anyone who's suffering because of this.

CNN are reporting that residents have been smelling gas for a few weeks and it most likely is a gas explosion from a plant. Looks devastating.

To be honest, I haven't felt well since I got back from San Bruno (about 5 hours ago). As I mentioned above I have asthma, and my lungs have felt "congested" all night... yeah yeah I know, it was stupid for an asthmatic to go near a huge fire! Anyway, I'm keeping everyone there in my thoughts, and also hoping the air clears up quickly.

P.S. I did get a glimpse of the fire, when I was driving up 380 on the way home - billowing smoke, but looked like the actual fire was gone (or at least dying down).

Glad to hear your friend & you are OK Gizmo.

My subdivision has a natural gas pipeline that runs right through the middle of it. Looking at the scope of destruction in San Bruno, I pray nothing like that ever happens here.

My friend works in the area and sent me this:

Alpine Inn & Suites in Daly City is offering free rooms to San Bruno fire victims (415)334-6969.
Red Cross is having a shelter there. San Bruno Rec Center # [650-616-7180] 251 City Park Way.
Petco in San Bruno offering shelter for pets in need due to this explosion. 1150 El Camino Real San Bruno, CA 94066 (650) 589-375
To donate blood: 1-888-393-GIVE.

Just in case anyone knows anyone who needs any help, I'm sure the info is already out there, but just in case.

I was at the 24 hour Starbucks in San Bruno when this happened and we heard the explosion a little past 6pm. I got fairly close to it as I was heading towards Daly City around 6:45ish on the 280/101 interchange and I knew it wasn't just a house fire. The flames were being projected a great distance into the air and I knew there weren't any industrial buildings in the area so I figured it had to be some kind of gas explosion. I heard this morning that something like 50+ homes are destroyed and 120+ damaged in some way. My heart goes out to anyone who's lost someone or property to this tragic incident.

The CNN feed showing video from the air is just horrifying. It looks like a war zone.
