Any thoughts on the commute from Novato to SF? We just purchased a condo in Novato and I'll be commuting to the financial district. I know the Doyle Drive project is going to be complicating things. There is a Golden Gate Transit express bus stop near our place; I'm also thinking about trying the ferry but I'm told that getting to and from the Larkspur ferry terminal is a pain. How long can I expect the bus commute to take? What about carpooling?

Good morning,
Golden Gate Transit Routes 54, 56, and 58 offer direct service between Novato and the SF Financial District. Golden Gate Larkspur Ferry offers frequent departures to the SF Ferry Building. Please call 511 (say "Golden Gate Transit," then "operator")/TDD 711 to speak with a GGT customer service rep who can help with detailed schedule info, bus stop locations, travel times, and fares. Or visit Golden Gate Transportation District and use the 511 Trip Planner on our homepage to plan your trip. Thanks for considering GGT/GGF!

Thanks .. I was interested in some more details, like, how long does it really take to get to and from the Financial District from Novato, and is it really feasible to take the ferry or is it too difficult to get there from Novato so not worth the effort? (Any new ferry terminals being planned for further north?)

There's been chatter for years that there will be a ferry from Port Sonoma (you'd have to drive from Novato on Atherton Ave over towards 37) but that could happen never. Who knows.

There's also the SMART Train that has been in the works for quite sometime that is supposed to happen within the next 5 years or so, (doesn't help you much now does it), that would go from Cloverdale down to Larkspur with a connection to the ferry .

The ferry ride from Larkspur to SF is about 50 minutes I've been told.

My friend's husband takes an Express GGTransit bus from Petaluma (about 15 minutes north of you at least) and it takes about 1 hour and a half to get down to the terminal in the financial district.

I think the ferry takes 30 minutes. But I'm not sure how long it would take to get to the ferry terminal from Novato...

If the Petaluma bus takes 1 1/2 hours, that at least puts an outer limit on what I can expect ...

Thanks!
