I'm interiewing for a visual designer job at the Wal-mart office in Brisbane. If I take it I would be moving out from NYC.

Does anyone work there now and if so do you like it?

PS - The offer is about $15k more than I make now.

Thanks!

Office is in the middle of nowhere so unless you live in SF or the peninsula and have a car the commute can be tough. Lunch options are limited to driving, a couple of delis and the food trucks. The people I met were smart, nice, talented, and very mainstream - no tattooed pierced types, for good or bad. The company is huge so you only get to know the people you work directly with. It is very bureaucratic - it took 3 months for me to get some software I needed since it had to go through the approval chain. For me the money was not worth the time sitting in commute traffic and the feeling of being a small cog in a very big wheel.

Well it will be very different than living in NYC. Are you really a city person or would you look forward to living in a quieter enviiornment?

Of course I live, right here, a few miles from Wal_Mart headquarters so I have a fairly good idea how the company works. This is what I have heard, from those working for them and recently retired: great company, great benies, but their employees do work for their money, whether in the retail end or the company management end. Most of the people we know who have worked for them, stay with them for years so it can't be a bad choice and $15k is a lot of increase. Your cost of living wouldn't be that much different than what you have now.
