The bf gets more grouchy with commutes than i do, so if the commute is unbalanced, we'd prefer for it to be closer to PA than Oakland. He's in tech, so he's less tied to the regular work day schedule, whereas I'll definitely be commuting during the traditional times.

Mlilbrae is nice... Foster City is kitschy...Hillborough is familyish. Geographically Castro Valley/Hayward is dead center between the shortest commute route but no public transportation to Palo Alto.

BART to Union City, then Dumbarton Express bus. Soon there may be a Caltrain option as well.

I live in Millbrae, and would recommend it. Its not the most exciting town, but its got a nice little downtown with some good restaurants, a couple of pubs, coffee shops, multiple grocery stores and a sat. morning farmer's market. If you're at all near downtown then its walkable to Bart/Caltrain, which is really convenient. There is some noise from the airport, but since the planes don't go directly overhead its not intrusive.

OP, Stephen1110's depiction of Oakland makes it look like paradise. PLEASE go walk around Lake Merritt for yourself. I just left there. Type in any address in Oakland into www.meaganslaw.com or into the Oakland PD's site to see a map of the crime. I lived in Kensington, Berkeley, Oakland and Piedmont, then finally left the area.
