Are there any bad/unsafe areas of Palo Alto (not East Palo Alto)?

No. although I am sure someone will tell you about a "wrong side of town" and it probably has apartments. That would not be an unsafe area by any stretch of the imagination. PA is 90% suburbia with a few blocks of density. But EPA is right next door, but there is an imaginary border that keeps things very separate.

East Palo Alto actually borders Crescent Park, which is the MOST desirable part of Palo Alto, and parts of Menlo Park which are highly sought after. Don't ask me why.. I have no idea. All I know is you go one block and you're in idyllic suburbia, and then the next block over you have roads which are barely paved and rent-controlled apartments that look like hell.

There is nowhere in Palo Alto city limits that I would think twice about. Well, I suppose I wouldn't want to be behind the McDonald's drive thru, but barring something like that, it's all good.

Probably the bigger concern over crime is that Palo Alto is insanely expensive. Expect to spend a million dollars for what will be more like a 150k suburban home most anywhere else in the country. Rent is expensive too. In fact- everythings expensive there ranging from the restaurants, parking, and so on. I worked there for 2 years. I did not enjoy it period.

Those would be where crusty old rich guys keep what local children's sporting equipment dares intrude upon their lawns.
