Yea, I'd also consider Maxwell Park. That's the best area in East Oakland below 580. There aren't too many houses there that cost less than 200 K but if you find one then you're good. Just make sure that you're at least 5 blocks up from Foothill Blvd. The further up the better.

Here's one:

2539 55th Ave, Oakland, CA 94605 | MLS# 40489527


It's only 3 blocks up from Foothill Blvd and its on a main street but it's one of the bigger houses you'll get in that price range... believe me when I say that you don't want to be wandering around on Foothill Blvd in that area though.


EDIT: Here's one for slightly more $ in upper maxwell park:

You get less sq ft but you get a house in one of the safest areas in Oakland for under 250 grand.
