These kinds of threads always attract venomous trolls and really ignorant people who just don't know what it is they are talking about.

First of all, the person asking could do us a huge favor by being more specific, maybe defining "Place" for us. Are you looking for the cheapest city, neighborhood, county, etc?

Are you looking to rent or buy?

How much are you looking to spend?

Furthermore,
Neither Richmond nor Oakland are the cheapest as far as average rents or average home prices.

Morgan Hill is not cheap. It's more expensive than many parts of San Jose. Actually, SJ has some of the cheapest decent properties for many many miles around.

What are you looking for exactly? Your posts are incredibly vague. What is your criteria? There are lots of cheap (by CA standards) places in the Bay Area, but usually for a reason. Usually either the crime is high or the commute is horrible.

As previously posted, Morgan Hill is not cheap. Gilroy is cheaper. Hollister is even cheaper than Gilroy. The further south you go though, the further you go away from the main job-centers. East San Jose is a broad term. Typically East SJ refers to the more gritty area on the east side of the city, but actually there are many areas on the east side that are nice. The area directly around Eastridge Mall is not very nice. The further east you go, especially up into the hills, the nicer it gets. Also, the further southeast you go, it gets very nice as you head through the Evergreen/Silver Creek Valley area.

You also mentioned Livermore and Modesto. Livermore is expensive as well as the whole Tri-Valley area in general (Pleasanton, Dublin, Livermore, etc.). Modesto is cheaper but it's in the Central Valley, so not really relevant to this message board.

You're not giving us much info to help you with. You keep throwing out random places and asking if they're cheap. Do you have a job lined up? Do you have a budget? Do you have a family and need access to good schools? Are you even looking to move here?

Richmond isn't that cheap, and not everyone is too wussified to live there (or Oakland). I used to work in that town, and looked at housing before deciding to stay in SF... rentals were on-par with most of the surrounding areas, aka Berkeley & Pinole, and even the real estate wasn't inexpensive. Example, I looked at a complex of condos for sale, and the smallest units were over $300K. You can find some cheap foreclosures in the "Iron Triangle," but even I would probably steer clear of that neighborhood.

I agree we'd need more info to make good suggestions, but typically the farther east you go the cheaper it gets... Concord, Tracy (still Bay Area?), Pleasant Hill, etc. I've also looked at renting in those towns, and it was considerably cheaper than anything in Richmond - even Oakland. Morgan Hill is actually kind of pricey, but nearby Gilroy isn't too bad. Here's an idea, go to SFBay Craigslist and type in maximum $900/mo, then see what towns pop up.

Anywhere on section 8. LOL

Obviously where there is lots of crime it tends to be lower income areas.

Parts of Oakland, parts of Concord, parts of San Jose, parts of East Palo Alto, parts of Richmond, parts of Hayward, parts of Tracy, parts of Vallejo, parts of Benicia, parts of Pittsburg, parts of Antioch. I am sure there are others.

Yes, that's one of the cheaper parts of San Jose. I live about a mile and a half from Eastridge. The area around Capitol/Silver Creek is not bad at all for how affordable it is, but it doesn't look like much. The houses are really really ugly.. and the traffic is a constant headache.
