Then again, I am partial to Crockett and Port Costa also as they seem to be throwbacks from another era and very un-Bay Area-like. Port Costa is a bastion of small-town life in the otherwise urban and suburban Bay Area sprawl. Not to mention the fact that you can stay in a former bordello for $27/night while partying across the street at the Warehouse Bar

The refineries in Martinez are prevalent, and pungent. When I worked in Martinez we would get some interesting smells when the wind blew a certain way. The Reliez area of Martinez is quite pretty though, and downtown Martinez is surprisingly charming (near the court area).
Agree. Hercules has an interesting project that's finishing up right now. Hercules Waterfront District Since Hercules lacked any semblance of a downtown, they started this and I think it's turning out really well. They have a handful of businesses moving in and plans for more to move in but it's shaping up well. I think the potential walk ability of this neighborhood would make me lean more toward Hercules than Pinole, but Pinole definitely has more character. And, I love the Nation's on San Pablo.

I'm also a fan of Crockett, and Port Costa... and Rodeo is weird like that too - feels a bit podunky. =P

That's one of the most underrated areas in the whole Bay Area for sure.

For those who hate Vallejo are just ignorant and doesnt really know Vallejo....Vallejo actually is one of the best in the Bay Area...Look, Vallejo has one of the best location because of its situated by the water, it just need a good investor to go there and revitalize it..As far as crime and drugs if you watch the local news, Oakland, Richmond, San Pablo, Hayward, San Leandro and as well as some cities in the Los Angeles area are way worst than Vallejo, as a matter of fact maybe 5 times as worst...Vallejo has mostly minorities biut these minorities are middle class who mostly commute out of town to work...its mostly residential areas with lots of houses in hills with great views !! unlike these other cities...flat all over and ridden with ghettos....name a Vallejo ghetto area...hardly none, just the old area near the Carquinez Bridge. You have Mare Island that could make a great location for a Great Mall, Casinos or Industrial companies, etc, etc, etc..Vallejo has the greatest potential in the Bay Area as far as Real estate in my opinion.....JUST NEED SOMEONE TO SAY POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT IT !! positive ???? YES POSITIVE !!
Dont know why its even in the top 10...whoever pick Vallejo doesn't live in Vallejo, bias against Vallejo or want to give Vallejo a BAD NAME...

Well, I stayed at a Days Inn (or Comfort of Quality) in Vallejo and really felt uncomfortable there. It was in the Ghetto. I do not use ghetto because of the presence of minorities. My mother raised me better than that. No, it was a true ghetto. I'm sure there are also nice parts, but let's not sugar coat things

Vallejo, most of Hayward, parts of Richmond, Antioch, Pittsburgh are all dumpy to me. I'm sure there are some redeeming qualities for each of these cities, but I would never move to any of them. Never.

^ The Crest is a ghetto for Vallejo, but it's not a ghetto by country-wide standards. The Crest felt pretty safe (at least one-half of it--Gateway Drive divided the "good" Crest from the "bad" Crest when I was growing up until crack cocaine came along. As the older folks who lived on the "good side" died and younger folks moved in, it all stepped down a few notches.

And there are other sketchy areas in Vallejo outside of the Crest, but because there is still a strong remnant of the old guard from Vallejo when it was a naval town, it doesn't rank as the "worst" city in the Bay to me.

It is quite diverse. I've had some of the best Thai food in my life in Fairfield (and one place in Chico - I know that's weird) and there are some amazing Mexican dives.

Highly recommend:

1. Sukhothai, 258 Sunset Avenue (amazing customer service and great food. 4* on yelp; restaurants.com has a gift certificate for them if anyone is ever in the area)
2. Bangkokian, 1500 Oliver Road (not as good as the above, but still yummy)
