I was in Oakland this morning to catch the Grand Lake Farmer's Market, do a few laps around Lake Merritt, and a visit to the Ellington at Jack London Square and I'm just so, so struck by some of the subtle beauty in Oakland.

Today was one of those excellent rainy, gray, crisp fall days that people like me (from the Midwest) seem to seek out years after they've left the Midwest. (Oakland's fall colors reminds me so much of home)

Did anyone else enjoy the rain?

Here are a few photos from my morning:

At the sidewalk of the Lakeview Library on the way to the Farmer's Market, I stumbled upon some fallen leaves and a puddle reflecting the El Embarcadero street sign. This is now one of my favorites.

Reflections on Merritt were pretty great this morning. This guy seems pretty happy to have caught his breakfast.

The lamp-post near the Chocolate shop - where else can you get BBQ chocolate?

Catching reflections downtown

Enjoying a few laps - though I looked really dorky with my Canon.

Finally, was checking out the Ellington at JLS. View from one of the models:

Interestingly, people actually prefer (and pay more $$ for) the view toward the docks/Alameda/the distant bay and Peninsula view better than the one that faces downtown and the Oakland Hills. I MUCH preferred this one.

Imagine that view, from the Ellington, at night.

This is a photo taken from a model inside the Ellington

It is a tough call or views in the Ellington. Hills or water. But maybe people do not want the morning light? I don't know.

Great pics!

Good eye, and for what it's worth, I likely look dorky too since my Canon has been a constant appendage ever since we moved to the Midwest/Ozarks. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Thanks everyone. Oh, and we also had a thunderstorm last night! Ahhh.

Stephen - you're a man after my own heart with that night shot.

The advantage you Canuts have is that you're able to make such jokes LOL
