I have accepted a position in Redwood City, but would prefer to live in SF.

How bad would be the commute?

Hwy 101 is usually slow during regular commute hours and bunches up near SFO airport and Hwy 92 - maybe 45 minutes or longer.

I-280 is better and faster.

There is also a commuter train between SF and Redwood City - caltrain.com - and there are shuttle buses from the station to the bigger companies in the area such as Oracle and EA.

I used to live in Noe Vally/Castro area and the commute to Redwood shores (which is 2 exits before Redwood city), took me 45 min - 1hr, and that was at around 8-9 am. If you leave home very early, you could possibly get there in 30 min, but going home, traffic starts getting bad by 3:30.

Caltrain is ok, but I get sick of taking trains after about one week of riding them around. its pretty efficient though. The only drawback would be getting to the Caltrain station, depending on your city location. I live on Post and Leavenworth and its about a 30 minute robust walk to get to the caltrain station. A cab ride is about $8.

You could also take the KX express bus run by Samtrans. It runs nonstop from San Francisco to the airport, then runs as a local bus from southern San Mateo through Redwood City and down to Palo Alto.
