I'm from the East coast and have absolutely no idea where I should even begin.

I'm working in Redwood City and will have a car. My budget is (preferably) less than $1K per month. I don't mind having roommates.

Any advice?

Redwood City is a nice place to live. Anywhere west of El Camino Real (Hwy 82) between Whipple Ave to the north and Woodside Rd to the south. $1000 will probably get you a studio, about $1500 for a 1 bedroom apt.

Check Craigslist for roommates.

I live in a 2 bedroom, west of El Camino and the rent is $1500. It's a pretty nice area, quiet suburban. I'd stay away from the areas across from the railroad tracks.

Closer to Whipple is definitely better. Closer to Woodside Rd not so much.
