I think if Hunter's Point, Potrero Hill and Visitacion Valley were a consolidated independent city (that wasn't a part of San Francisco proper) it would be easliy worthy of being one of the top five most economically depressed, dangerous, high-crime, polluted, run-down and unlivable urban areas in the country.

Hey if you are a yuppie living in Potrero then you can just pretend that the gigantic and dilapidated housing projects don't actually exist

true...if that were the case, it would have a population of 67,633 people (as of 2008) in a little over 9 square miles. In 2008 it had 30 murders and in 2007 it had 35 murders, which would have given it a murder rate of 44.4 and 51.7 per 100,000 residents. That means it would have had the highest murder rate in CA on both years. And here's how it would have ranked those years among all cities of 50,000+ residents:

2008:
1. New Orleans - 63.6
2. Camden - 70.9
3. Gary - 51.2
4. Potrero/HP/visvalley - 44.4

2007:
1. New Orleans - 94.7
2. Gary - 73.2
3. Camden - 53.2
4. Potrero/HP/visvalley - 51.7

Would have been 4th highest on both years...definitely not good.

Stats are from the bureau of justice: http://www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/Crime/Local/RunCrimeTrendsInOneVar.cfm (broken link)

Surprised the story is even in the news at the Chron.
Police staffing expected to shrink

Unlike the equivalent Oakland articles, they did not include the number or percentage of police officers the force would shrink by, lessening the severity.

^yeah that won't be good.

Some stuff that happened over the past few days:
-Teenager stabbed on Muni bus remains in critical condition | Bay City News | Crime | San Francisco Examiner
-17-year-old girl hit with gun, robbed | Mike Aldax | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Computer and two phones stolen at gunpoint in robbery | Mike Aldax | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Hate crime alleged in beating of gay San Francisco business owner | Mike Aldax | Crime | San Francisco Examiner
-Three robbed in San Francisco within five hours | Rob Nagle | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Suspect fights, bites police before succumbing to arrest | Mike Aldax | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Three separate burglaries jar San Francisco residents | Rob Nagle | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner

A couple from earlier this month:
-Gun-toting bandit robs store of cash | Rob Nagle | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Woman assaulted during store robbery | Mike Aldax | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner

and some from last month:
-Cops put brakes on carjackers | Rob Nagle | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Pistol-whipped victim defeats robber | Rob Nagle | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner
-Bandit makes off with restaurant’s cash, parking validation tickets
-Car full of thugs wasn't just clowning around | Rob Nagle | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner

none of those incidents were reported in the SF Chronicle either, except for the muni stabbing. The other crime stories that are up on SFgate are instead about a kidnapping in Oakland, and a boy stealing a van in Marin, and then a couple articles about stuff in antioch, richmond, san rafael, something about Barry Bonds. Oh and then there's an article about the SF city attorney suing some stores that sell crack pipes (but that one makes SF look good so of course it's on SFgate). So I guess a boy stealing a van in Marin is more important to know about than robberies and such in SF?

Wow, who would have thought that I actually feel safer walking home after work in Oakland, than I would in San Francisco.

Maybe it was the culture buffer of Vallejo!

Oh well, I love my place in Adam's Point, and will not be looking to move anytime soon. San Francisco can keep its weak ass infrastructure, crappy transit system, and overpriced self of self-importance. I don't need it at all.

As the t-shirt says: I HELLA LOVE OAKLAND

looks like SF may lose even more officers now, through a combination of retirements and cuts...possibly over 500:

Budget toll on SFPD could top 500 officers

That will help the city's budget! The city needs to cut their salaries in half and get ride of the pension as well.

Some more recent stuff that also isn't in the Chronicle:

20 teenagers brawl on the 38-Geary bus in the Richmond district, and one of them beats a police officer trying to stop them:
Teenager beats police officer on Muni bus | Mike Aldax | Law and Disorder | San Francisco Examiner

A 21-year-old man was shot multiple times through the window of his home in the Potrero Hill projects last night, and is in critical condition:

Is that all you have to say about this situation? Regardless of how you feel about their pensions and salaries, losing 500 cops is not going to be a good thing for SF.
