I am from Atlanta, GA. I have heard so many wonderful things about the Bay, that I want to give it a go. Can anyone help? I need to know areas that have lower rent, but are still nice places to live( I have a 2 year old son). Also what types of jobs are in the highest demand? What are names of Local newspapers, or Temp agencies( for work). I would appreciate any response. Thanks so much.

Here are links to 2 main newspapers:

ContraCostaTimes.com - HOME
SF Gate: News and Information for the San Francisco Bay Area

I would also check out Craigslist to get an idea of what jobs are avail and also to get a feel for how much rent is in different cities.

craigslist: san francisco bay area classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

Can you give more info as to what type of work you would like to do? Are you willing to commute--traffic can be bad--or will you rely on public trans? If so, you may want to find a neighborhood with a BART station.

BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit District

Also, how much rent are you thinking about paying? Housing costs will vary considerably depending on the neighborhood. I do agree that the bay area is a great place ... however the cost of living in family-friendly communities can be quite high.

I would be glad to answer questions about specific neighborhoods, but am most familiar with the East Bay--Richmond, EC, Albany, Berkeley, Oakland, Lamorinda, WC, Pleasant Hill, etc.

Good luck with your research!

Names of local newspapers are the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News. Go to www.sfgate.com. You will find living in the Bay Area to be expensive unless you go further inland away from the Bay Area. And you don't want to live in some dumpy area with crime. Towns like Fremont, Sunnyvale, Daly City, San Bruno and Mountain View are some of the less expensive areas. But not by much!
