The roses are ready in about May. You are way too early.

They bloom right around mother's day. The volunteers trim, prune and so on starting in march or so.

Perfect time to visit? Early June.

Before the roses bloom, the Rose Garden is for the fitness geeks. People run the stairs. Like firefighters and other fit people.

But I find it a great place to read a book. Plenty of benches and a super clean bathroom.

Go to a ball game. For less then 10 bucks you can get a ticket. Not really many places besides pittsburg and such where one can still do this.

As others have noted, you can also take Bart to San Fran.

If you have a car, I would recommend Redwood:

Redwood Regional Park | East Bay Regional Park District

There is a 7+ mile loop that starts along the ridge and drops down and circles back along a stream beneath the redwoods. Parts of the trail allow dogs and there are people walking and jogging there (i.e. safe for a single woman). About a 15 minute drive from downtown Oakland.

Must do thing is pack heat. Oakland is a disgusting and disgraceful place where violence is the law of the land. Only a fool would go there but if you must bring 1 or 2 guns.

I used to live right across the street from Lake Merritt. There were little boats, pedal boats, no sail boats. That was in 1960.
