If I want to read a blog I'll go read one of the millions of boring blogs you can find online. If I want news I'd like to be able to get it from my local paper's website.
Actually I really like the blogs and columns on the Chron. But the website is very bad at helping you figure out what you are getting when you click into an article. News on the other hand is lacking. There are occasionally good features though.

Yep, they haven good columnists-its the actual news reporting that leaves a lot to be desired. There is too much of an editorial slant to all many of their news articles.

I haven't seen any blogs that were particularly interesting, I just think they should have separate sections for blogs and news. Treating blog posts the same as an AP article about the latest news from Egypt is stupid.

And I wouldn't say that the SJ Mercury News is any better than the Chron, it just feels like a boring local newspaper, at least the Chron has more of a big city paper feel though the Chron is pretty provincial too and not really worth reading if you're not from the Bay Area. The thing that annoys me about the SJ Mercury News is that half the stories are tea leaf reading articles obsessing about gossip about Silicon Valley firms, to the point of sycophanty (sycophance?). I know tech firms are big there but c'mon. When the Chron's front page is something like crime on Muni, the front page of the Mercury News will be a hyperventilating article with the largest typeface possible about how Apple shares went down .00005% or how Steve Jobs ate some bad sushi.

They never let the facts get in the way of good hyperbole. I used to think they just catered to the foil hat crowd but now I'm beginning to think several of their writers are wearing foil hats themselves.

Well, it's the daily for Silicon Valley, and there are plenty of subscribers who go for that stuff. Provincialism occurs with every paper not called the NY Times or USA Today.
