Hi folks, I was visiting California from the east last week but did not get a chance to go to downtown Oakland as I wanted to. I am curious to know if downtown has seen the improvement that was envisioned a few years back? It's been years since I've been to downtown Oakland.

There seems to be a number of very affordable condos for sale in the area of the 12th street BART area. Are these luring people downtown?

I saw some other topics on this thread but they were all 2+ years old

IT is defineitly busier. Some projects stalled but Art Murmur and Uptown are busy nightlife options, Old Oakland also has lots of new stuff and nightlife, and Jack London Square is improving. Here is the last tally I have seen: Economy casts shadow on Oakland 10K plan's 10th - SFGate (http://articles.sfgate.com/2009-07-12/news/17216512_1_new-condominiums-ellington-oakland-s-community - broken link)

The City Walk building finally got more funding and is being completed. The real estate bust probably helped get the condo prices back to reality. Lots of the initial buildings are changing hands now at logical prices. I'd call it about a 70% success but since I am passively in the market for a condo, I notice these downtown spots that are well priced are getting purchased fairly quickly. The Ellington is selling pretty well, but some blocks are still definitely empty after work hours.

Projects like the B-shuttle are helping though. New free Broadway shuttle cruises downtown – Oakland North : North Oakland News, Food, Art and Events

This is one of the best museums around if you have never been. And you can end the night at The Layover, a pseudo dive bar that opened about a year ago.

It is definitely worth a visit. There are lots of cool restaurants and bars have opened. And the architecture is still great as always.

Glad to hear it. I think even at 70% success, it's a big accompishment.
