Naturally after Prince, the Vienna Philharmonic is the obvious next cultural thing to do.

Quote:
A little over a century ago, Gustav Mahler was the conductor of this orchestra, which draws on a wide repertory; it plays Verdi, and even Boulez. Yet its reputation is as conservator of works by those composers who made Vienna the classical musical epicenter of the 19th century.

The Berkeley performances will include symphonies by Mahler, Brahms and Schubert (three core members of the Vienna gang), as well as major works by Wagner (the Prelude and Liebestod from "Tristan und Isolde"), Schumann and Bartók, whose Hungarian roots, Bychkov says, place him within the Austro-Hungarian empire and the orchestra's range of specialty.

Say what?

Prince can go back to the crypt from whence he came, but I'd jump at the chance to listen to the Vienna philharmonic.

What's your point?

Ah, Berkeley is lucky. Although my tastes for orchestral music has lessened for chamber.

Surprised they aren't coming to the Sf Symphony Hall... Mad props to Bychkov. He conducts a mean symphony, yo.
