I read in and earlier post to avoid Latham between Escuela and S Rengstorff in MV.

We were thinking of breaking our journey at the San Antonio Shopping Center to get supplies from Walmart etc. Given this is only about 1/2 mile to the west of the area to avoid, will this likely be an issue ?

P.S. Please don't mock - we are foreigners, if you asked me whether as a tourist you should stop for supplies at the Safeway store in London's Peckham neighbourhood I would say no, keep going till you get to a less sh**ty area... not because you're going to get shot there on a Sunday afternoon but because the chances of being hassled in some way are that much higher...

Thanks

Nick

This area is very safe. I was just there today. You will experience no problems there.

For some bay area suburbs, people overestimate the dangerousness of the neighborhood. MV dangerous isn't let's say inner city dangerous. It just means, older, less trendy strip mall. :P

Anybody who says any of Mountain View's neighborhoods are dangerous has never spent any time in a real ghetto. There is a certain underlying level of gang activity and crime centered around some of the dumpy apartment complexes in certain neighborhoods in the city, but it's mostly isolated. Most of MV is nice and it's one of the more expensive places in the South Bay to live.

I used to work about a mile away from the San Antonio shopping center and used to work out regularly at the 24 Hour Fitness there. I never felt even remotely unsafe in the area. It's also directly across the street from the border of Los Altos which is one of the most expensive/upscale cities in the Bay Area.

In all truth, I'm a Wal-Mart shopper too because I'm a cheap-ass. I've never been to a Wal-Mart that doesn't have some lower class/thug-ish/loser-ish types of people hanging around. As far as Wal-Marts go though, the MV one isn't so bad. Now, if you were asking about the Wal-Mart in Union City, that's a whole other story.

I'm in that Wal-Mart once in a while if I need something and I'm between jobs in that area. I've been sheltered in upscale suburbs all my life, and I've never felt unsafe there.

San Antonio Shopping Center is fine and pretty safe. There's a Trader Joe's, some restaurants around such as Chili's, Fresh Choice, a Thai eatery right near the Wal Mart.

yea lol there's nothing wrong with the san antonio shopping center. It's nice... you got Rasputin Music (great record store) across the street from Sears and the Walmart is a block down the street. There's nothing wrong with this area even at night.

Where you DON'T want to be at night is by Rengstorff Park.

Speaking of the ole Latham hood:

Father, son held in 2004 Mountain View killing

I lived there for a while back in the bad late 80s / early 90s turn of the decade. Definitely heard some drive bys back in the day. This one was back in 2004. Last time I went by there I did still see a few "interesting" individuals. But no where near what I used to see back in the day.
