If stockton merges with the bay, the bay will be home to the top 3 highest crime cities in California. But who knows, so many of the people commuting from stockton to the bay were just construction workers and such during the RE boom.

As well as 8 of the 10 richest counties in California.

A region of huge contrasts indeed.

using 2008 crime stats for cities of 50,000+ residents (which i have ready, i'm too lazy right now to compile 2009 stats), then the Bay Area would also have the CA city with the 6th highest violent crime rate as well (SF), along with number 8 (Vallejo), and with #7 just next door (Sacramento):

1. Oakland - 1,968.4
2. Compton - 1,838.8
3. Stockton - 1,474.7
4. Richmond - 1,074.9
5. San Bernardino - 1,033.8
6. San Francisco - 1,024.1
7. Sacramento - 997.7
8. Vallejo - 953.8
9. Lynwood - 937.8
10. Huntington Park- 903.6

Kind of interesting when you contrast that with the "common knowledge" that most people have who have never seen crime stats, who say that Southern California is the most dangerous by far (i've run into that a lot in my life, though less so as time goes on). As 18Montclair said, this is definitely a land of contrasts...perhaps more so than most US cities. You can make it really big here, and you can fall really hard.

I totally agree.

We have the best of the best and the worst of the worst at the same time.

Interesting that sac has less crime then SF. As far as the bay being a land of polar contrasts and extremes (as well as irony, maybe that's why there are so many hipsters there) I have noted this a thousand times. Though when natives seem to make the same points its okay, when I do it, its not. Oh well.

You don't even live in the Bay Area, why do you care?
