Alameda voters should have watched Waiting For Superman before giving the public school system anymore money.

I am skeptical of bills like this where they state that the money has to be used for specific purposes. As we saw with the state lottery bill, because the money went to a specific purpose (schools), it just meant that money previously allocated for that purpose was reduced and redirected to the general fund.

If this passes, still pretty close and there are absentee ballots to count, I think property owners in Alameda were handed a bag of goods.

This is a steep property tax increase.

You might as well come out and say that there should be no taxes. Americans are too selfish to want to help anyone who isn't themselves, and then they end up bitching about why the country is falling apart.

This is a great investment and I applaud Alamedans for showing this kind of support for their schools.

This is what other cities need to do instead of waiting for Sacramento and/or DC to bail them out.
A fool and his money are soon parted .

So I take it you'd be fine with the residents of OC voting to raise taxes on people in San Diego? Its not much different than renters voting to raise property taxes on home owners.

5.00 a gallon gas, no jobs, parcel taxes, prop taxes, lower wages than any place in the US for the same job. Can we tax our way out of this mess, especially if you are unemployed?

What's not to like.

Why does Alameda need more revenue for their public education system? According to Census Bureau, California ranks the top in teacher salary nationwide.

State Rankings--Statistical Abstract of the United States--Public School Teachers' Average Salaries

On average, teachers in the Alameda earn $67,932. Superintendents receive an average of $158,622 annually. Remember, that is average within the school district. That means there are teachers earning higher than 80,000 annually, with superintendents earning much more than $220,000. They have also received in increased in salary from 2009 by 1.4 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.

See how well your school district pays its teachers, superintendent - Sacramento News - Local and Breaking Sacramento News | Sacramento Bee

Does this mean that the higher taxes imposed on residents of Alameda district are finally going to benefit the students instead of overpaid teachers and superintendents?

I hope they will continue to enjoy their benefits and pensions.

No, that's not true at all. Here in LA we passed a Sales Tax to support transportation projects a year or so ago.

But notice how EVERYONE pays Sales Tax?

Making a certain segment of the population ("property owners") pay for schools is what is "selfish" here.

It's ALWAYS easier to pass the burden onto someone else though, right?
