Does anyone know if the tsunami in Japan is suppose to reach as far as San Francisco this morning? I heard it could hit the whole west coast.

I have a son in SF and one in Seattle.

Thank you ahead of time.

It's possible but Tsunamis are unpredictable so there's no way to tell for sure. I just heard the first signs of it are in Hawaii (water starting to rise). As long as your sons are smart enough to heed any warnings and do the sensible thing if told to evacuate, they should be just fine if the wave should hit either area.

If anything is going to happen, I hear it should happen by 11:30 a.m. EST, but that's just an estimate. We'll just have to wait and watch. Hopefully the energy will decrease.

I have family member in SF. Their house is in Sunset district (29th Ave), not far from the beach, now I am worried. Hope their house is ok.

Well, they just said on the news that when it reaches San Francisco, its going to be 1-2 feet so I wouldnt worry at all. Hawaii reported little to no damage and they are just 3,700 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake.

So I think we're in good shape, of course the local news is all over it and people are leaving coastal towns like Half Moon Bay.

They expect the wave to arrive in SF at 8:08--in about 25 minutes.

Around here they have blocked off all the beaches and are keeping people away, and anywhere very close to the shore like parts of Pacifica have been evacuated, so even in a worst case scenario nobody should be in harm's way. Sounds like the waves won't be very big but people should still stay out of the water because you don't know what will happen. Even small waves can be dangerous if they have a lot of power or if they rush onshore causing flooding.

Apparently some docks in Crescent City have been destroyed (though I have no idea how sturdy they were) and some boats in Santa Cruz were damaged.

Jeez, four people in Oregon were swept out to sea by the waves and survived, but some guy in Del Norte County CA was swept out and apparently did not make it back. Definitely stay away from any Pacific shoreline.

Tsunami sweeps 5 to sea, rips out Calif. docks (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/03/11/state/n020930S49.DTL&tsp=1 - broken link)
