There is metered parking and some parking lots around there. How long were you planning to be there?
If less than an hour you wont have many problems finding a meter or some other parking at 8am.
Parking all day probably means you want to pay for a parking lot at Fort Mason (closer to marina green) or Fisherman's Wharf - not cheap but cheaper than a parking ticket.
Depends some on how far you're willing to walk. If you're not willing to walk more than a few steps, then just go ahead and find some expensive pay lot and enjoy it. If you're willing to walk a few blocks up a hill, free parking can be found
Well, we are intending to spend the day walking around, and hills do not faze us, so if you could point us towards the free parking, that would be much appreciated, thank you.
For info, we would not usually take a car into the city, but we will be driving up from LA and will still have it on the Saturday before dropping at SFO and getting on a plane - it just seemed a shame to leave it sitting in the hotel parking lot when we're paying for it...
If you're visiting fort mason area, you can just park around the marina green. There is also a small parking lot at the corner of laguna and marina blvd, which is in front of the entrance to the fort mason center. When I used to work in the area, that lot was pretty much all day parking. Sometimes it was reserved for valet parking. Regardless of which one you park in, it's a nice walk.
Now that we've looked into it a bit more, and realised that a ticket will cost us $1.95 each way, it seems that leaving the car at the Balboa Park BART station (we understand there is free parking ?) and riding up to Powell Street seems the best way to go.
Can we just check that this is a safe and sensible option if we plan to park at the BART station about 7:30am on a Saturday morning, and return to the car in the evening (guessing we're unlikely to be later than about 9:00pm).
Yes it would be safe. But I don't think there is a parking garage at Balboa Park BART so you'd have to park on the street. Balboa Park is a pretty safe area but you always run the risk of someone breaking into the car, but it's a pretty small risk if you don't leave anything valuable sitting on the seats and the radio isn't easily stolen (often you can take the radio face off to discourage thieves).
It's fine. That BART station is pretty safe. You'll have no problems. As long as you move your car before Monday at 4AM.
