However, as to the matter at hand, these types of studies and attempts at social engineering can't fail to remind me of the grand expansion to suburban Sacramento known as North Natomas. Forget that it was permitted to arise in the midst of a flood plain, the powers that be deemed it "fair" and mandatory that it include X-number of multi-family units and lower-income homes. I forget what the formula was.

So up went all the houses and intermingled were apartment buildings and homes of lesser value than most of the others. The end results were sadly predictable and unfortunate. Crime increased and I've no doubt home values were impacted, especially those near the "affordable" housing. Unfortunately, government doesn't appear particularly adept at learning the lessons of past failures.
Prickly and suspicious too. I'm guessing retired cop? No matter. My dad was raised farming in the Maple Lakes region a ways NW from Minneapolis, mom from Chicago, and I grew up in a converted duplex near the Como Park zoo in St. Paul. SLO woulda been nicer probably than freezing my buns. But you are partly right, I did make it most of the way through the 11th grade before I quit. So Iguess that's more than 10th grade technically. Nope. I went to work in a print shop for a couple years and then did a 4 and out in the service including two hot tours, a GED, and then straight back into printing graphics until I retired. That's my trade. I know more about orthographic film, 4 color separations, ball and brush grain plates, and presses from AB Dick's to multiccolor Harris's and Heidelberg's as most college graduates ever know about their majors. But I share this with you to make a point about what we have been discussing: it don'[t take no private schools or college to get a edmacation. THough reading helps. And I always was pretty good at that.

Now the example you just gave above is a pretty good one to show how government can fail its objectives. That ain't the same as school busing though. And here's the thing, America, unlike most world countries, is founded in diversity. That is our national character. And the way its been going for the past couple generations we are heading down a path to modern tribalism. Instead of encampments of teepee's on the prairies we're getting into ideological encampments. You lash out at progressives. Progressives lash out at conservatives. That ain't America's founding character. America's character is diverse people working together in spite of differences. That isn't taught in private schools. That is larned out in the general population.

Doesn't have a damn thing to do with progressives or conservatives. Respecting diverse opinions and culture isn't limited to progressives. Is it?

Governments of all kinds screw lots of things up. But the goals are usually based on good intentions.

PS. Three Minnesota winters were enough for me.

And as the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." I have absolutely no problem with naturally occurring diversity. After living in three other countries where I was decidedly in the minority it would be foolish to. What I do take exception to is when it's government-forced as more often than not the outcomes are less than sterling and it usually results in resentments all around.

Diverse cultures add strength and character to our society and always have. That belief should and usually does transcend political leanings, or at least used to. But perhaps that, too, is lost in the polarization so rampant in these times. If so then more's the pity!

PS. Three Minnesota winters were enough for me.

How about with unnaturally occurring exclusivity?

Nobody likes being told what to do. By government or anyone else. But it's not hard to imagine what driving would be like without traffic laws forcing order and safety right? If we accept enclave intensification as our evolution we will lose America.

I only been back I think four times in 46 years. Never in winter. Once I hit California in '66 I was done for. Thomas Wolfe was right.

It works both ways. Or perhaps not at all.

And we are.

The exact same thing has been going on in Westchester County, NY for several months from an administration hellbent on looking for racism utilizing a methodology which they refuse to reveal; witness their Mafia-like settlement from Ally Bank thanks to the out of control and 100% unnecessary CFPB.

As long as there occurs a reasonable diversity amongst the fishy species. Should one be introduced into the habitat and cause havoc and disease to the natives, thereby wiping them out, then that lone remaining species is susceptible to one nasty bug wiping them out. And then no fish!

But we would rather not have resort to boating the others in there simply to accomplish some sort of winning version of diversity, would we? Tends to upset the ecological balance.

Nah. Deltonians only allow whitefish. With a nod to some red.
