I am meeting a friend in San Fran before we head to the Napa Valley. His flight doesn't get in until 10pm so we are thinking about staying in San Fran over night. Which area is the bast place to get a hotel so that we can just stumble out and have a few drinks and something to eat in a fun lively environment at that time without the need for a map any suggestions gratefully received. He is 39 I'm 41, we both like to party and although he is gay is not into the whole full on gay scene.

Most hotels are around Union Square--stay east of Mason to avoid the Tenderloin. Lots of bars and restaurants around there.

Before you head to your hotel and nightlife, go up to Twin Peaks for a beautiful view of the city. (west on Market street, up the hill, right on Twin Peaks, up the hill)

I'd just get an airport hotel at that point - flight is going to be delayed (come on, you know it will be!), deal with the rental car hassle, on the road by 11/11:30, downtown at midnight, checked in and in your room at 12:30, downstairs and getting oriented you'll get one, maybe 2 drinks in? All that at downtown prices for the room, parking, bar tabs? Not worth it.

I didn't notice that time...10pm is definitely late for SF, once he gets through the crowd getting off the plane and through baggage claim and figures out where you are, it will be at least 11. Not many restaurants are open that late, SF is not NYC. I'd also go for an airport hotel and order a pizza then drive to Napa in the morning.

No can't be that airport hotels are the best option ?? thats disappointing....
We will only be in napa for 4 days so will do hand-baggage and that will surely cut down on the getting out of the airport time... I can get there anytime and sort out the car as I'm only flying from NY... I haven't seen him for nearly 8 months.. theres no way we will be sleeping before 3am

The issue is just how late he's getting in. The only thing that will be open around 11-12pm will be bars and they shut down at 2AM.

ahh ok. well in that case we might need to hit a bar for a couple of hours and then order room service
just feel it would be a shame to be in SF and not leave the airport.
Thank you for everyones input.

I'd stay in Union Square or Nob Hill in your case. The Chancellor Hotel is right in Union Square and the rates are reasonable. Enjoy!

Maybe come back from Napa early and spend a day in SF, I can't imagine there's that much to do in Napa, unless it's a work trip or you're doing a lot of hiking or mountain biking or something like that. If you're just going to wineries and restaurants and walking around the towns, 4 days seems like a long time to spend there. Or you can always come back to the Bay Area some other time and set aside a few days in SF.
