When I was a young teen and first started meeting people from other parts of the Bay Area, I used to get offended when I heard "frisco". And I also got offended when people from other parts of the Bay Area said they were from San Francisco, but were actually from San Jose, Concord, East Bay, or other parts of the Northern California.

I grew up and always called the city San Francisco. And then when I got older, I had to distinguish San Francisco from other parts of the Bay Area by calling it "the City". I would have to introduce my hometown and say, "Im from San Francsico... the City." Because so many other northern Californians would say, "I'm from San Francsico." But they were actually from Sacramento or something.

I never say "Frisco", but I don't feel weird when other people say it anymore. It's very commonly used by street kids all over the Bay Area. I think it has become more accepted over the last 20 years. "San Francisco" is repped by the intellectuals, yuppies, tree huggers, normal people and health nuts. "Frisco" is repped by the ghetto, hip hop lovers, and wannabe gangster kids. Both people say "the City". Nobody says "the Fran".

I also hear lots of people call it, "The beautiful City, San Francisco." Even if they are not from here.

Negative names include, "the gay city", "hippie city", "bleeding heart liberal city", "ultra-liberal city", "I hate America", "tree-hugger city" and the "I hate the U.S. military city"

You can also call it "SF". Some hip hoppers call it "the Sco", or the "Sucka Free"

Don't call it Frisco or San Fran. or the Fran. That's whack.

The only people who can call it Frisco are Hell's Angels.

Yes, "The Fran" is one Ive never heard of and it sounds funny.

The next time I go to DC I'll call it the DiCk and then say that everyone there is jealous of me.

As far as 'Frisco'--its actually quite popular in the communities Nineties Flava mentioned-even those communities in the city itself.

I never call it that though. I almost always refer to SF as "The City"--mainly out of habit since that's all Ive ever called it.

Also, Nineties mentioned Tongans. Its funny cause kids call it Frisco and older folks call it 'SITI'--a Tonganization of the word 'City'. LOL.

The Fran??? Seriously?

and I thought "D A Y G O" was horrible

Frisco has become common but I grew up calling it either San Francisco of The City so I never got into that habit.

If you spend your days worrying about what people call sf, you might want to consider getting a job or a hobby.

I call it "San Francisco" or "the city." I sometimes type "SF" but never actually say "SF." It doesn't really bother me what people call it. Not too sure why people get worked up about it. If I hear someone say "San Fran" it tips me off that the person is a tourist, but it doesn't bother me in the least.

Besides wearing shorts in the summer, there is no surer way to be labelled a tourist and a moron, than by calling San Francisco "frisco".

It is San Francisco, or "The City".

Remember, when in Rome...
