Oakland Tribune is the main one. There are some obscure ones in the East Bay, like the Argus for Fremont. Also there's the Contra Costa Times.

Here's a list of Bay Area newspapers:

The Tribune has really improved dramatically ever since it was taken over by the Bay Area News Group, whose principal paper, the SJ Mercury News is a far superior paper to the Chronicle as far as quality.

That's how the Chronicle operates: Robberies, stuff about prostitution, and attempted assaults apparently only get reported if they occur in Oakland, but not SF. A shooting in Sacramento was also reported the other day, while the last several shootings in SF itself had been ignored. That's pretty bad in my opinion, considering this is the San Francisco Chronicle. The media is constantly sh!#ting all over Oakland, so it's no wonder that it has such a disproportionately bad reputation compared to SF.

if you read the examiner and compare it to the chronicle you would think you were reading about two different cities.one with very little crime and the other with a crapload of crime.the chronicle just ignores crime in san fraqncisco.

What an excellent quote. Really drives home the point we've been making for years. Oakland is the Chronicle's punching bag.

And here's more from today that the Chronicle can ignore:
Men Pistol Whipped And Robbed In SoMa: News: SFAppeal

but enough of that...

I'm glad Oakland and SF continue to see drops in crime.

now this pisses me off:

Mayor Jean Quan failing on Oakland crime rate

Oakland's crime rate is going down, as it has been for the past few years, and the Chronicle STILL needed to make their loser "Oakland expert" Chip Johnson (who they only ever have write about crime in Oakland, surprise, surprise ) proclaim how the mayor is somehow "failing" becuase of crime. Never mind that the stats DO show crime being down, and never mind the fact that she's been mayor for less than a year. And then you have all the mouth-breathing non-Oakland/non-Bay Area residents who only post comments on SFgate so they can spout their conservative talking-points, who are backing the article up because it fits in with their preconceived notion that Oakland is some kind of hell on earth. And the comical runs this story while continuing to ignore and downplay crime in SF, of course. Truly disgusting.

edit: contrast that with when articles are run about crime increases/decreases in SF...if SF has a drop in overall crime, but a small spike in homicides, the headline would say something like: "CRIME DROPS" and then the article itself would say "but murders see a small increase". There would be no giant article proclaiming Ed. Lee/Gavin Newsom/etc. to be a "failure".

I'm not understanding the point of that article? Is he blaming the mayor for some random shooting at a club? What does that have to do with her? Also how long has she been mayor? A few months? What does he expect? Her to come in and wave a wand and turn Oakland into Marin in less than a year? He comes off like a child with no patience or better yet an ignorant fool that does not understand socio-economics. The crime problem in Oakland is like any major city in America, this fool fraud of a journalist is acting like it's a unique problem to Oakland when even precious San Francisco has a crime issue EXACTLY like Oakland's but has he ever written about that? That paper is called "SFGate" after all, shouldn't he be more concerned about SF's crime problem considering that is SF's paper and this "writer" is not even from Oakland.
