I'm looking for apartments in Russian Hill/North Beach/Marina for when I move out to Cali in July. What are these areas like? I'm a guy in my early 20's and I want to be near bars/super markets/transportation/other people my age but I also don't want to live anywhere sketchy/too loud.

Also are there any really good/really bad property rental companies to be aware of? I've heard this company called trinity management is really huge but also terrible.

Russian Hill is super expensive. I'm not really familiar with that area but I think Nob Hill is more of what you're looking for, it seems to be a popular place for young people who are just starting out in SF.

The Marina is maybe more people in their 30's, it has a reputation for having a lot of annoying yuppies and dopey sorority girls, though really anywhere in SF is full of yuppies these days.

North Beach doesn't have a ton of housing and is a lot of older buildings that are in various states of rehab or decrepitude. I don't think you'd find a lot of nice housing there though it can be a younger crowd. The area around Broadway and Columbus has a lot of nightclubs and bars which are rowdy and noisy, there's shootings there now and then.

Other than Nob Hill I'd look at the Dolores Park area, Duboce Park, Lower Pacific Heights, Noe Valley.

It will somewhat depend on your budget. If you can do $1600-2000 a month for a 1br, or $1200+ for a studio, then look at Lower Pac Hts, Nob Hill and the Marina. If you need to go cheaper, look at the other areas I listed.

If you can afford to live in these areas, you can't go wrong with your choice. I love them all! I'd say Marina District has the most young professionals. There are many small bars in the area. Lot's of wealthy good looking women. This would be my first choice, but like I said...the three districts you mentioned are all great. Enjoy it!

Price and area...lower nob hill and lower pac heights are lower quality. However, most of these two districts are still nice, just not as nice as nice.

These are on a completely lower level compared to Russian Hill, North Beach, Marina. However, they are still nice. It's easy to get on a MUNI bus to downtown. You have the park right there. There are also a good variety of restaurants (mostly ethnic). The weather is more foggy though.

Upper Pac Heights is a lot of mansions and condos for the megarich. Lower Pac Hts is more apartment buildings and younger people and has some cool restaurants and boutiques and is just north of Japantown which is a great place to go for a meal. Lower Nob Hill is usually a euphemism landlords use for where Nob Hill meets the Tenderloin.

Inner Richmond and Inner Sunset are more middle class than the other areas listed so far and have a lot of cool restaurants and bars and shops. I would like them but they get really chilly and windy like anywhere in the Sunset or Richmond. If you aren't interested in a yuppie area like the Marina but want to be near young people and have sunnier weather, I'd look at the Western Mission, specifically around Dolores Park.
